Autism Assessment
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges in social communication and interaction, as well as restricted and repetitive behaviors and interests. Whether you're a parent concerned about your child's development or an adult seeking clarity about your own experiences, understanding ASD can help you access the support and resources you need.
At Healing Spaces Psychological Services, we recognize the profound impact that ASD can have on individuals and their families. Our comprehensive assessments delve beyond surface-level observations to uncover the nuances of ASD symptoms, allowing us to provide personalized interventions and support. With a focus on empathy and understanding, our goal is to empower individuals with ASD to thrive. If you're seeking clarity and strategies to navigate the challenges of ASD, we're here to help.
Our Comprehensive Approach to Autism Assessment
If you're considering an evaluation to rule out Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), you're in the right place. ASD is more than just occasional social difficulties or a preference for routine; it's a neurodevelopmental condition that may present challenges, but with support, individuals can thrive in their daily lives.
In academic settings, autistic individuals have unique strengths and may find certain aspects of the environment challenging. You might notice that you excel in specific subjects or areas of interest, while also navigating differences in social interaction. Sensory experiences may be intense, but they also provide opportunities for heightened awareness and appreciation of the world around you. Your individuality shines through in your approach to tasks and activities, contributing to a rich and diverse learning experience. Social interactions may present opportunities for growth and connection, as you navigate the complexities of communication with authenticity and empathy.
At Healing Spaces Psychological Services, we understand the intricate nature of autism. We pride ourselves on our comprehensive approach to ASD assessment. Our evaluations go beyond standard checklists and rating scales; we provide a range of assessments, including hands-on tools, collateral interviews, record reviews, and more, to ensure you receive an accurate diagnosis. Our goal is to provide you with a deeper understanding of your experiences and to offer personalized recommendations to help you navigate life more successfully. Whether it's in academic, professional, or personal realms, we will support you every step of the way.
Why a full evaluation matters
Autism is often misunderstood, and signs can show up in very different ways depending on age, gender, cultural background, and life experiences. That’s why at Healing Spaces, we take a comprehensive and culturally responsive approach, so you or your child receives the most accurate diagnosis and the right support.
Many people come to us because their experiences with autism don’t fit the “typical” picture. We specialize in:
-
Girls and AFAB individuals, who may present differently and often go overlooked or misdiagnosed for years.
-
Individuals who have learned to mask autistic traits until social or emotional challenges become harder to manage.
-
Culturally competent evaluations for BIPOC clients.
-
Differentiating autism from trauma, anxiety, or social difficulties, which can have overlapping features, while also recognizing that many disorders are diagnosed together.
Seeking a new autism diagnosis can feel overwhelming or even scary. At Healing Spaces, your privacy and safety are our top priorities. Any information in your chart will only include what is legally required, and all details you share with us are treated with the highest level of confidentiality. We strive to create a safe, supportive space where you can explore your experiences without fear or judgment. Ready to gain clarity and take the next step? Schedule your comprehensive evaluation today and get answers you can trust.
Autism Assessment for Children
If you're considering an assessment for your child to explore concerns about autism, you might be wondering about certain behaviors or differences you've noticed. Maybe your child finds it challenging to make eye contact or struggles with following social cues or engaging in pretend play. You might also notice sensitivities to certain sounds, textures, or lights, or repetitive behaviors like hand-flapping or lining up toys. It's important to remember that autism can show up differently in every child, and some may have strengths in certain areas while facing challenges in others. This can make it tricky to recognize, which is why a thorough assessment by professionals like us is so important. We're here to help you understand your child's unique needs and provide support every step of the way.
Autism can also present differently in girls or older adolescents. Girls, in particular, may develop coping mechanisms that mask their autism symptoms, making it harder to recognize. They may mimic their peers' behavior or develop intense interests in specific topics that are socially acceptable. Similarly, older adolescents may present with more subtle signs of autism, such as difficulties with social interactions, understanding nonverbal cues, or managing emotions. They may also struggle with executive functioning skills like organization and planning. These atypical presentations can make it challenging to identify autism, but our team is experienced in recognizing and addressing the unique needs of girls and older adolescents with autism. We're here to provide the support and guidance you and your child need on this journey.
Autism Assessment for Adults
If you're an autistic adult exploring the possibility of an autism assessment, you might have noticed certain differences in how you navigate the world. You may find social interactions challenging, struggle with sensory sensitivities, or have difficulty understanding nonverbal cues. Perhaps you have intense interests or routines that are important to you, or you find it challenging to adapt to changes in your environment. It's common for autistic adults to encounter these and other challenges in their daily lives, but it's also important to remember that autism is just one part of who you are.
Seeking an autism assessment as an adult can be incredibly helpful for several reasons. Firstly, it can provide clarity and validation for your experiences, helping you better understand why you may have encountered certain challenges throughout your life. Additionally, an autism diagnosis can open doors to support and resources specifically tailored to your needs. From therapy and counseling to support groups and accommodations in various settings, knowing your autism diagnosis can empower you to access the tools and support you need to thrive in all aspects of your life.
At Healing Spaces Psychological Services, we recognize the unique experiences and strengths of autistic adults. Our assessments are tailored to address the specific needs of adults, taking into account your individual experiences and challenges. Whether you're seeking validation for your suspicions or looking for support in navigating life as an autistic adult, we're here to help you every step of the way.
Autism in Women
Autistic women are often overlooked or misdiagnosed for much of their lives. Many women are not identified as autistic until adulthood, in part because autism can look different in women than in men. You may have spent years “masking," consciously or unconsciously camouflaging your differences to fit in socially or meet others’ expectations. This masking often leads to exhaustion, anxiety, or feeling misunderstood, and can make it harder for others (and sometimes even yourself) to recognize your neurodivergent experience.
Women who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color (BIPOC/POC), are even less likely to be accurately diagnosed. Cultural expectations, gender roles, and systemic biases often mean your unique strengths and challenges are overlooked or misattributed. You may have been told you’re “too sensitive,” “too intense,” or simply “different,” without ever receiving the validation or support you deserve.
At Healing Spaces Psychological Services, we are uniquely equipped to identify autism in women, including those who mask, those with ADHD, and women of color, using a trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach. Our assessments are tailored to your lived experiences and the ways autism may show up differently for you. We often utilize the MIGDAS-2 (Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum, Second Edition), a gold-standard, conversation-based tool designed to capture the nuanced ways autism presents in adults, especially those who might not fit the traditional diagnostic profile. The MIGDAS-2 allows us to look beyond stereotypes and honor your unique communication style, interests, and sensory experiences.
